2025 NBA Draft: Five Top Prospects to Watch
The 2024 NBA draft has just concluded, and the 2025 class of rookies hasn't even had a chance to lace up yet, but that doesn't stop us from looking ahead to the next year's draft. While Cooper Flagg is currently the consensus top prospect, he may not necessarily be the number one pick, as the 2025 draft class features four other extraordinary talents. So, let's go ahead and take a look at ESPN's draft expert Jonathan Giovoni's five hottest prospects for the 2025 draft.
Cooper Flagg, SF/PF, Duke University
Probability of being the first overall pick: 51%
Since he made the decision to skip his senior year in high school and enter the 2025 NBA draft just 11 days before his birthday on December 21, Flagg has been the frontrunner for the 2025 class.
Flagg hasn't done anything to earn this recognition, but he's just been anointed as the top prospect for the 2025 draft. He merely participated in the USA Basketball Select Team this summer before the Olympics in Paris, where he garnered high praise while working with NBA superstars.
As an explosive player, Flagg contributes on both ends of the court. Offensively, he has improved his three-point shooting and is an outstanding passer. On defense, he applies pressure, showing intensity in his court coverage, rim protection, and high-level defense. He played for the powerhouse Montverde Academy (Florida) team that went undefeated with a record of 31-0 and won the national championship last season. He seems like the kind of player whose teammates will benefit from his talents, making him even more impressive as a player who can impact the game without scoring.
Flagg's only downside is his age, ball-handling skills, ability to create scoring opportunities, and the burden of high expectations. He just turned 17 six weeks ago when his Duke season began. Flagg has a bright future as the potential number one pick in the 2025 class, but he will have to demonstrate adaptability to the highly competitive ACC conference.
Airious "Ace" Bailey, SG/SF, Rutgers University
Probability of being the first overall pick: 25%
Bailey's on-court achievements don't quite measure up to Flagg's, but he's certainly a rising star. Coming from a smaller high school and a grassroots team, he has recently burst onto the scene and turned heads since turning 18 on August 13th.
His grassroots background has given him experience in becoming a scoring-focused player. He has developed his game to become a two-way player, which aligns well with the needs of NBA teams today. However, this sometimes affects his efficiency on both ends of the court.
At 6'10", Bailey brings explosiveness, defensive versatility, sound decision-making, and focus on shooting. He can create his own shots from various angles while handling the ball. He can also contribute in rebounding, steals, and blocks, thanks to his abundant athleticism and competitiveness. His highlights are frequently circulated on the internet. Scouts are constantly wondering just how high his ceiling can go.
Continuing to refine his decision-making and maintaining consistency in Big Ten competition will help Bailey stay at the top of the draft board. His ability to develop his shooting prowess makes him a potential star with plenty of room for improvement. His skills still need refinement in some areas, which he will work on during his NCAA season.
Dylan Harper, PG/SG, Rutgers University
Probability of being the first overall pick: 10%
Harper dominated the court in April at the McDonald's All-American Game, Nike Basketball Summit, and Jordan Brand Classic, which drew attention from NBA scouts and made him a popular pick for the 2025 number one spot.
At 6'6", this point guard possesses a solid frame and a 6'10" wingspan, which contribute to his exceptional ball handling, strength, and defensive presence. He excels in finishing around the rim and displays aggression and craftiness on defense. He also brings playmaking abilities while handling the ball. Harper also shows excellent court vision and basketball IQ.
In his high school career, Harper was a smooth outside shooter. What sets him apart, however, is not merely his vertical leap but his outstanding athleticism and aggressiveness. We will see how he adapts his shooting skills to Big Ten competition.
Rutgers University will provide a broad platform for Harper to prove why he deserves a high draft position.
VJ Edgecombe, PG/SG, Baylor University
Probability of being the first overall pick: 10%
Edgecombe is a member of the Bahamian national team that competed in the Paris Olympics this summer alongside many NBA players. There, he proved that he is not your typical 18-year-old player.
Edgecombe might be the most explosive prospect in the 2025 class, capable of moving on the court with incredible burst and speed. Known for his impressive defense, he can cover nearly every position on the court. Coupled with his exceptional three-point shooting ability, he is virtually unstoppable on offense.
Edgecombe is in the process of transitioning from a wing player to a dual-threat guard. With a strong build (6'5", 187 lbs) and a 6'6" wingspan, he will have no problem handling the ball.
His decision-making and consistency were not always balanced in his high school career, so it will be interesting to see what role he plays at Baylor University and how he adapts to high-level competition. If he can replicate his performances in the Big 12, he will continue to rise in the rankings come June next year.
Probability of being the first overall pick: 4%
Trawley garnered attention from NBA scouts when he scored 18 points and dished out four assists in the Nike Basketball Summit. He also participated in an international matchup between foreign teams and the USA, where Edgecombe, Flagg, Bailey, Harper, and 2026 potential top pick A.J. Debanska were also involved.
With an explosive first step and quickness, combined with his finishing ability, exceptional court vision, and developing decision-making in shooting, Trawley is one of the most intriguing point guards at 6'5".
If he continues to defend his title as the best playmaker and passer in the 2025 class while making improvements in other areas, he will be on the radar of any high lottery team seeking a point guard.
Playing in the French Pro A and EuroLeague competitions, Trawley will have a broad stage to showcase his decision-making, which is extraordinary for an 18-year-old player. He has a long season ahead to continue improving his defensive intensity, ability to attract defensive attention, reducing turnovers, better communication, and displaying leadership qualities to elevate his position among the 2025 rookie class.
