NBA is full of surprises, and there are always unexpected outcomes.
The Bucks started off poorly, and the Grizzlies were no pushovers either. Both teams had key players out due to injuries, but if we were to say which side was at a disadvantage, it would have to be the Grizzlies. They were missing key players such as Bane, Clarke, Kennard, Winslow, and Jackson Jr., and they were playing their second game of a back-to-back.
Of course, you can argue that not having Clarke is a major advantage for the Grizzlies. That's fair. But the Bucks' style of play was just too horrifying. Just ask the Grizzlies' previous opponents, who were all smiles when they saw Lillard and Holiday on the court.
Only the Bucks didn't have much to smile about. The Grizzlies' reinforcement at the 5 position was solely dependent on the draft. While Lillard's offense may still have room for improvement, you can't expect much on the defensive end. He has only blocked 2 shots so far this season. Coincidentally, one of those blocks came against Lillard. If we were to summarize this game in the simplest words, it would be: Lillard didn't show up. And let's not forget that Holiday didn't either.
Lillard had a terrible game. He struggled against any Grizzlies' interior defender that he faced. Small forwards Anderson and Melton may have caused some disruption, and the Bucks' players couldn't seem to make open shots when Lillard passed to them. Otherwise, Lillard would have had at least 10 assists. But these explanations are meaningless. Let's go back to the basics - the Bucks acquired Lillard with the basic expectation of neutralizing the opposing center through pick-and-rolls. If they can't do that, Lillard's impact is greatly diminished. Lillard went 1 for 12, and it's hard to believe that the rest of the Bucks' players had any confidence left.
On the other side, there was Lopez's invisible defense. The Grizzlies are not a team known for their spacing, but whenever they had a favorable matchup, Lopez was caught outside the paint, which is not normal. More often than not, Lopez just couldn't protect the rim. Blaming the Bucks' perimeter defenders like Trent Jr. for not being able to contain Morant is true, but Lopez's shortcomings also played a part. It's hard to believe that he got beaten in his coverage area; I can only conclude that Lopez is really getting old.
The Bucks' best period in this game was the beginning of the second quarter. Without Lillard and Lopez, the Bucks played a great defense, with Giannis leading the charge and gradually catching up in the score. But once Lillard and Lopez returned, it became the Bucks' weak interior that Lillard couldn't do anything against, while Morant and the Grizzlies destroyed a stronger defense. The disruptive power of the Grizzlies' point guard became the key factor in determining the outcome of the game.
The Bucks need Lillard, the invincible hero, to calm down Giannis' restless mentality before Middleton returns. This is a necessary script that needs to unfold.
Time is running out for the Bucks, really running out.

The second matchup between the Suns and the Clippers was a fantastic game that perfectly showcased the strengths of both teams.
Why were the Clippers able to lead by 21 points?
It's still their defense and their deadly three-pronged attack.
Throughout this season, I have mentioned the Clippers' defense more than once. After the Suns game, the Clippers rank 8th in defensive efficiency, which is quite impressive. Their backcourt and frontcourt defense are both strong, and their rim protection is solid. They have great discipline, a team effort, and cover all bases. It's hard to expose the Clippers' defense in the following ways:
Beating their individual matchups one-on-one. Even the weaker defenders in the starting backcourt are heavyweights; it's difficult to beat them head-on when there is help defense.
Attacking their paint. Zubac won't allow it.
Crashing the offensive boards. It's tough; the Clippers' frontcourt has height and actively positions themselves.
Stealing passes and cutting behind the defense. It's challenging too; the Clippers' off-ball defense is well-coordinated and rarely allows backdoor cuts.
Launching fast breaks. Still difficult; the Clippers' transition defense is excellent, unless it's a direct counter-attack resulting from a Clippers mistake.
The Clippers have thought about every aspect of their defense, except for one flaw that they can't solve - Zubac's natural problems with defending pick-and-rolls as a traditional center.
This game reminded me of Game 2 in the series between these two teams last year. In Game 1, the Clippers showed resiliency and toughness, and Ty Lue trusted Zubac to overcome his flaws by contributing in other areas and suppressing the Suns' inside scoring. However, it turned out that Zubac became a target for the Suns to showcase their shooting skills.
In the third quarter, the Suns went 15 for 15 at one point, making every shot no matter where they were on the court. Actually, the Suns' opening plays were quite consistent: they relied on pick-and-rolls centered around the 5 position. This process created various opportunities, such as pick-and-roll handlers shooting, corner threes, slipping screens for open shots, and more. Besides Allen, who was not accurate, the entire Suns team seemed unstoppable.
Lue didn't have a good adjustment. Towards the end of the third quarter, he benched Zubac as if it was a planned rotation, and in the fourth quarter, he continued to use Amir Coffey instead of Zubac. Compared to the previous Clippers team, Lue now needs Zubac more because he forms a strong frontcourt trio with Harden and Batum. They are indispensable:
Harden is the engine, and you could even argue he is the only engine. The effectiveness of Batum and Zubac depends on him. Although he has crucial mistakes in the fourth quarter of every game, it's an inevitable flaw when you have the ball in your hands for so long;
Harden is not the same as he used to be. The old Harden wouldn't let the team struggle with a lack of firepower, no matter who he played alongside. But nowadays, only his mind remains at the same level, while his legs, skills, and firepower are not what they used to be;
Zubac is his legs, and Batum is his hands. Harden needs a way to compensate for his lack of threat in the middle, and in the Clippers, Zubac's slip screens and bowling play are the only way for him to do so. They also act as a shield for both Harden and Batum. Harden needs someone to pass the ball to besides himself, and Batum is the only other player on the team who can handle the ball and digest possession through shooting;
Harden initiates, Zubac attracts in the middle, and Batum seizes opportunities. This simple offensive logic keeps the Clippers running smoothly. You won't find substitutes for each of them on the deck. It's an unchangeable situation until that person hiding in the cabin steps onto the deck. There's no doubt about it.
In the end, Lue compromised and took out Zubac, who had far exceeded his career-high average playing time per game. He tried using a small lineup to catch up with the Suns' five-guard lineup, hoping to use quicker defensive rotations to counter the Suns' lineup. This also meant putting all the offensive burden on the aging Harden. If Harden could turn back the clock, perhaps the Clippers would still have a chance, but his stats clearly show that:
11.6 assists per game, ranked 1st in the league;
A 33.3% usage rate, a 52.4% true shooting rate, and an average of 6.2 turnovers per game.
This is the limit of Durant's responsibility.
In this game, the Clippers showed everything they had, but they couldn't win, and no one should be blamed for that.
The Suns also showed what their lineup is capable of. Going 15 for 15 in a row is a combination of luck and a blessing that not every team can experience. The Suns' shooting ability has been proven time and time again. Now, they need to find a more balanced way of playing.
You can't accept the "small ball" lineup of Durant plus four guards.
But what about Durant plus Deng plus O'Neale, with three forwards and two guards?
It might be worth a try.
